How to Move a Shopify Brand to Amazon Without Losing Control of Your Listing
Why resellers and hijackers show up first
If your Shopify brand sells well, there is a good chance it is already on Amazon. You just did not put it there. Retail arbitrage sellers buy from your store or your wholesale accounts and list the product themselves. Sometimes they create a new listing with their own photos and a title stuffed with keywords. Sometimes they attach to an existing one and compete for the Buy Box.
That is a problem for three reasons. First, the listing content is not yours. Images, claims and descriptions written by a stranger become the first thing Amazon shoppers see about your brand. Second, you do not control price, so a reseller clearing stock can undercut your own store. Third, the reviews and sales history accumulate on a listing you may struggle to take back.
The fix is not to race resellers on price. It is to establish legal control of the brand on Amazon before you build anything else. Everything else in this guide depends on that step.
Trademark and Brand Registry sequence
Amazon Brand Registry is the program that tells Amazon you own the brand. Once enrolled, you get stronger control over listing content, access to tools like A+ content and Sponsored Brands, and reporting tools for infringement. Without it, any seller can edit or create detail pages under your brand name with very little friction.
Brand Registry requires a registered or pending trademark in an eligible country. Many Shopify brands have never filed one, because the store worked fine without it. If that is you, file now. A pending application is enough to enroll in Brand Registry, so you do not need to wait the many months a registration usually takes.
Amazon IP Accelerator is the shortcut most brands should use. It connects you with vetted trademark law firms that file the application at pre-negotiated rates, and Amazon grants early access to brand protection features while the application is pending. The sequence looks like this:
- File the trademark, ideally through IP Accelerator, using the brand name exactly as it appears on packaging.
- Create your Seller Central account under the business entity that owns the trademark.
- Enroll in Brand Registry with the pending application number.
- Only then create or claim listings, so your content is the authoritative version from day one.
If resellers already have listings live, Brand Registry gives you the standing to correct the content and report sellers who misuse your brand. It does not remove every legitimate reseller of genuine product, which is why tightening your wholesale and distribution terms matters too.
Which SKUs to launch first
Do not upload your whole catalog. The brands that struggle on Amazon usually launch too wide, spread a small ad budget across dozens of listings, and end up with no product earning enough sales velocity to rank.
Start with two to five hero SKUs. Good candidates share a few traits:
- They are already your best sellers on Shopify, with real repeat purchase data behind them.
- The unit economics survive Amazon fees. Check referral and fulfillment costs against your price using the Amazon selling fees page before you commit.
- They have clear search demand on Amazon, not just strong performance from your email list or social audience.
- They are easy to ship and unlikely to be damaged, which keeps return rates and fulfillment costs predictable.
Variations, bundles and slower SKUs come later, once the hero listings convert and you understand how Amazon shoppers respond to your brand.
FBA vs Multi-Channel Fulfillment vs Buy with Prime
These three are often confused, and they are not alternatives so much as layers.
Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) stores your inventory in Amazon warehouses and ships Amazon orders with Prime eligibility. For most consumer brands it is the default for Amazon sales, because the Prime badge has a large effect on conversion.
Multi-Channel Fulfillment uses that same FBA inventory to ship orders from other channels, including Shopify. It can simplify operations if you would rather not run two inventory pools, though packaging and delivery experience are worth testing before you move your whole store onto it.
Buy with Prime brings the Prime badge, delivery promise and checkout onto your own Shopify site. It is a conversion tool for your store, not a way to sell on Amazon.
A sensible order for most brands: launch Amazon sales on FBA, stabilize inventory, then decide whether MCF or Buy with Prime makes your Shopify operation better.
Pricing parity with your Shopify store
Your Amazon price and your Shopify price should be the same or very close. Amazon monitors for prices that are significantly higher than what the same product sells for elsewhere, and it can suppress the Buy Box when it sees them. Going the other way, pricing Amazon well below your store, trains your own customers to buy elsewhere and quietly compresses margin.
The practical answer is to set one price that works on both channels after Amazon fees and advertising. If that price does not leave enough margin, the problem is the product economics, and it is far better to find that out before inventory is in a warehouse. Promotions should be planned across both channels so a Shopify sale does not trigger a pricing issue on Amazon.
A realistic 4 week sequence
Assuming the trademark is filed and inventory exists, a focused launch typically runs like this:
- Week 1: Seller Central account, Brand Registry enrollment, fee and margin check on the hero SKUs, keyword research for each.
- Week 2: Listing build: titles, bullets, backend search terms, image stack and A+ content written for Amazon search, not copied from your product pages.
- Week 3: Inbound shipment to FBA, listing QA, and campaign structure ready to launch: tight exact match targeting plus capped research campaigns.
- Week 4: Inventory checks in, ads go live, and the first search term reviews and negatives begin. Review programs such as Amazon Vine can help eligible new listings get early reviews.
Inbound timing is the variable you control least. Build some slack around FBA check-in, and do not schedule a launch announcement to your Shopify audience until the inventory is actually available.
When to bring in help
A small team can run this sequence on its own if someone has the hours and has done it before. Bring in help when the brand is already being hijacked, when nobody on the team has set up Brand Registry or FBA shipments, or when the Shopify business is growing and the Amazon launch keeps slipping to next quarter.
Revlyn Rapid Launch is built for exactly this: taking Shopify and DTC brands live and selling on Amazon in about four weeks, with a senior operator running the sequence. If you are not sure whether Amazon is right for your catalog yet, a free brand teardown is a good first step. FAQ
Can I enroll in Amazon Brand Registry with a pending trademark?
Yes. Amazon Brand Registry accepts a pending trademark application in eligible countries, and Amazon IP Accelerator connects brands with vetted law firms that file the application for you. Enrolling early is what lets you control the listing content before resellers shape it.
Should my Amazon price match my Shopify price?
In most cases, yes, or close to it. Amazon checks for prices that are significantly higher than elsewhere, and visible gaps confuse your own customers. Build Amazon fees into the price you set on both channels rather than running Amazon at a lower margin.
Is FBA or Multi-Channel Fulfillment better for a Shopify brand?
They solve different problems. FBA fulfills Amazon orders with Prime eligibility. Multi-Channel Fulfillment uses the same FBA inventory to ship your Shopify orders. Buy with Prime adds the Prime badge and checkout to your own site. Many brands start with FBA and add the others once inventory is stable.
How long does it take to move a Shopify brand onto Amazon?
A focused launch of a few hero SKUs typically takes about four weeks of setup work, assuming the trademark is filed and inventory is ready to ship. Revlyn Rapid Launch is built around that four week sequence for Shopify and DTC brands.
